The Urge to Purge
Hi Shelfie Friends!
We’re snowed in all weekend and when we’re stuck inisde, sitting on the couch all day, binging Housewives, clutter gets louder - you begin noticing anything out of place and you may feel…the urge to purge.
If you’ve been craving a declutter moment but don’t know where to start, you’ll be happy you opened this email! That’s the first step.
Here’s a few tips to start purging without overthinking it:
1. Pick one problem category
Choose a single category that’s actively annoying you like books, winter boots or mugs. Attempting an entire room or even just a corner might be too overwhelming or time consuming.
2. Pull it all out
Lay down a large sheet or towel to create a zone and go find all those items in the house and drop em all down on the sheet. Line items up like with like so you can actually see what you own. if you’re purging kids’ books for example leave the activity and sticker books behind for now and just focus on regular old books. Set a time to go off every 5 minutes so remind you to check and see if you side tracked. If the alarm goes off and you find yourself side-tracked, this will remind you to get back to it.
3. Decide what stays and goes
Make two piles - Keep/Purge. That’s it. Don’t micro categorize. Later you can decide what you donate, trash, recycle - or just donate it all. Or set it out on your stoop. Or recycle it all. Whatever you’re keeping should go back into a place that makes sense to you and your family, not an aspirational system, not Pinterest, just real life.
That’s it! No bins, no labels, no perfection required.
